War Veterans Experiencing Homelessness Desperately Need a Helping Paw!

Please help American Humane ease the tragic and wrongful suffering of one of the most-deserving groups imaginable: those war veterans who, day after day, are facing homelessness and despair.

These brave men and women made selfless sacrifices for their country, but somewhere along the line, their lives took a turn for the worse. Now we have an opportunity to bring them the much-needed comfort that a therapy animal can provide. But we can only do it with your help!

The human-animal bond is truly extraordinary, and it can make a world of difference to people in need. That’s why American Humane is determined to expand our Animal-Assisted Therapy Program and give veterans the precious moments of contentment that an animal’s gentle nuzzle, contented purr, or wagging tail can bring.

Will you help us meet this critical goal by donating today?

If you’re not sure, ask yourself this: Do you think some of our nation’s greatest heroes, many of whom have forsaken their own health and happiness, should be living a friendless and lonely existence on the fringe of society?

Or do you think these brave veterans deserve the unconditional love and gratitude that a therapy animal offers?

With your support, American Humane’s remarkable animal-assisted therapy teams can give veterans who are homeless a special kind of companionship, one that has the proven power to help heal emotional trauma.

The 200 therapy animals in our program are highly trained and perfectly suited to visiting people who can greatly benefit from a pet’s warmth, affection and non-judgmental nature. In addition, approximately one-third of our therapy pets are rescue animals who, like veterans facing homelessness, are working to overcome difficult pasts.

As Brent Hartman, one of our volunteer therapy animal handlers and a member of a military family, explains, “Sometimes therapy animals come from disadvantaged circumstances that parallel the stress and agony of military combat or combat preparedness. Both can be victims of incomprehensible human cruelty. Usually, the connection between veterans and therapy animals is bravery and independence.”

Brent should know. He and his amazing therapy cat, Tony, have visited veterans before. Tony was rescued from a hard life on the street, but is a “snuggler” at heart.

Walking jauntily on a leash, Tony stops pedestrian traffic in every facility he visits. And as soon as he settles down on someone’s lap and starts purring, a special connection is formed that can ease even the heaviest heart.

Please donate today to help pets like Tony brighten lives -- including those of veterans who have bravely served our country!
